About Us

The Institute of Balkan Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was founded on January 15, 1964 by a decision of the Council of Ministers of the People's Republic of Bulgaria under the auspices of UNESCO. It was established as a research and educational center for languages, history, culture and modern development of the Balkans.

The Centre of Thracology "Prof. Alexander Fol" is the successor to the Institute of Thracology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, founded in 1972. It existed as an independent unit at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences till the reforms from 2010. Then it joined the Institute of Balkan Studies creating the Institute of Balkan Studies & Centre of Thracology "Prof. Alexander Fol".

Situated in the historical center of Sofia, the Institute of Balkan Studies & Centre of Thracology "Prof. Alexander Fol" of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences occupied two beautiful old buildings which are architectural monuments. Close to the Institute are located some of the most important national institutions and historical sights, such as: the National Assembly, the Central Administration of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” National Library, National Academy of Art, National Gallery for Foreign Art of Bulgaria, St. Alexander Nevsky Patriarchal Cathedral, the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, St. Sofia Basilica from the 5th century, the Royal Palace housing the National Gallery, and the Presidency of the Republic of Bulgaria.
