Mosaics with Musical Themes (East and West) Viewed in Their Social Context
by David Parrish

This lecture examines images of musicians and musical instruments in Roman mosaics, especially works dating to Late Antiquity and coming from both the eastern and western empire. Pavements with musical themes typically decorated reception rooms in private houses, and they reflect actual performances in these kinds of spaces. There are represented mythological and realistic musicians, and chief among the former is Orpheus shown playing his cithara or lyre to charm the animals. Much musical imagery also is linked to the dance, often in a Dionysiac context, as depicted for example in the fragmentary mosaic with members of the thiasos from Stara Zagora. A key work illustrating realistic human performers is the Mosaic of Female Musicians from Mariamin in Syria, which features several musical instruments including a pipe organ. All of the artistic examples mentioned are interpreted with regard to what they reveal about ancient musical practice.
