8On June 20, 2018 the team 'Thessaloniki and the Bulgarians: History, Memory, Modernity' presented new edition, which collects some of the most interesting documents related to the topic of the project under the same name. The presentation provoked great interest, and despite the hot weather, the 'Sofia Press' Gallery and Bookstore was overfilled with many people interested in the topic, including scholars, archivists, heirs of Bulgarian families from Thessaloniki, diplomats, journalists, writers and public figures. Due to the exhaustion of available paper items, it was decided to provide free access to the electronic version of the publication. The album has already been completely uploaded on the project website and can be downloaded from the following link:

7th National Balkan Studies Meeting will be held on 23rd and 24th of November 2018. The topic of this year's edition is Weekdays and Holidays on the Balkans.

The organisers of the meeting are the National Committee on Balkan Studies and the IBSCT - BAS which await suggestions related to the problematic of the weekdays and/or celebrations on the Balkans in the past and nowadays, as well as the ways of their representation in literature, art, the press, etc. Applications containing title, abstract, author and institution will be accepted by 20 July 2018 at the following e-mail address: This email address is being protected from spambots. 20180607 185100 LLSOn June 7, 2018, the official presentation of the book 'Masks down! Nationalism in the Balkans in the 20th century' took place in the Information Center of the Ministry of Defense.
The authors of the monograph - Naum Kaychev, Bobby Bobev, Yura Konstantinova, Kalina Peeva, Roumiana Preshlenova and Aneta Mihaylova - are attempting to demystify the noble prepositions that politicians often justify the minority and tyrannical attacks in six countries in Southeastern Europe: Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania. The authors share the belief that the public presentation of these topics from the recent past is indispensable for a better understanding of the current challenges facing the region where we live.

Pokana Solun 2018On June 20, 2018 at 17h30 in the hall of 'Sofia Press' Gallery and Bookstore, located on Slavyanska Street No. 29, there will be the first presentation of the documentary publication 'Thessaloniki and the Bulgarians: History, Memory, Modernity. Documents'.

The publication is an outcome of the project 'Thessaloniki and the Bulgarians: History, Memory, Modernity' funded by the Scientific Research Fund of the Ministry of Education and Science (Contract № ДН 10/13 dated 17.12.2016) and was issued by the joint effort of the Institute of Balkan Studies & Centre of Thracology, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the State Agency "Archives".

Колкоквиум Рим 2018On May 22 in the conference room of the Department of Political Science at Roma Tre University, an international colloquium on Balkan historiography after the political changes that took place in the region in 1989 was held. It was organized by the Italian Association for European Southeast Studies (L'Associazione Italiana di Studi del Sud-est Europeo - AISSEE), the Department of Political Science at Roma Tre University, the Institute of Balkan Studies & Centre of Thracology "Prof. Alexander Fol" with the courtesy of the Romanian Academy in Rome.

Nationalism in the Balkans in the 20th century' will take place on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at 18h30 in the hall of the Information Center of the Ministry of Defense /Georgi S. Rakovski Street No. 106/. The monograph will be presented by Prof. Ivan Ilchev, Dr. habil., corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences who also reviewed the book.

On June 7-9, 2018 Section Cultural History of the Balkan Nations, IBSCT - BAS origanizes Workshop 'Balkan tinges' and three-day team building. Southeastern Europe, or as we are accustomed to calling it - 'Balkans', a concept that includes a wide range of colors, stands out with its distinctive and varied culture - a synthesis of events, historical collisions, concussion and rises of countries and empires.

Pokana Izlozhba AlFol 2018On June 4, 2018, at 14h00 at the Central Building of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (November 15 Street No. 1) a documentary exhibition "Time Traveler" will be presented. It is dedicated to the 85 years of Prof. Dr. Habil. Alexander Fol's birth. He was the founder of the Institute of Thracology at the BAS, currently Centre of Thracology 'Prof. Alexander Fol' at the Institute of Balkan Studies & Centre of Thracology - BAS. The exhibition is realized together with the New Bulgarian University.

15 posters present the life and work of Prof. Al. Fol. The story starts with his family of remarkable intellectuals, among whom the figurines of his mother, Vera Boyadzhieva-Fol, writer, journalist and public figure, and his father, Nikolay Fol, director and theatrical pedagogue, translator, author on books and plays for children.

The exhibition represents he most remarkable moments of life, as well as the inexhaustible multitude of aspects of the activity and the work of this scholar, public figure, teacher, artist, and visionary Alexander Fol - among students at the opening of schools in Troyan, Parvomay and elsewhere; among teachers and colleagues from museums and archeological sites; during his audience with Pope John Paul II; in Haus Wittgenstein in Vienna; during a meeting of UNESCO, Paris; together with Dalai Lama; with the Director-General of UNESCO Amadou-Mahhtar M'Bow, etc.

7On May 15, 2018 in Hall 1 of the Sofia University 'St. Kliment Ohridski' four monographs were presented. They were written and published under project implemented by the 'Alma Mater' University humanitarian complex. The program leader and compiler of the 'Regional Studies' series is Prof. Ivan Parvev, Dr. habil. Two of the authors are scholars working at the Institute of Balkan Studies & Centre of Thracology - Prof. Alexandre Kostov, Dr. habil. and Prof. Roumiana Preshlenova, PhD.

On May 8, 2018 (Tuesday) at 11h00 in the conference hall of the Institute of Balkan Studies & Centre of Thracology "Prof. Alexander Fol" (IBSCT) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, located in the city of Sofia, Moskovska Street No. 45, there will be public PhD thesis defense of Goar Hnkanosyan for acquiring the scientific and educational degree "Doctor" in professional field 2.2. History and Archaeology, Doctoral Programme Early Modern and Modern History. The topic of the dissertation is "Armenian cultural outbreaks in Bulgaria (1878-1944)". All scientific reviews and opinions od the members of scientific jury, as well as the autoreferate of the PhD student are available on the IBSCT website (http://balkanstudies.bg/bg/konkursi.html). Hardcopy of the dissertation is disposable at the IBCT office.
