23 02 2018 M.Gabriel 1On February 23, 2018 Mrs. Mariya Gabriel,  European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, visited the IBSCT. During the meeting with the Director of the Institute, Prof. Alexandre Kostov, Dr. habil., she was introduced to the activities of the IBSCT and to the research efforts of the scholars to study the European integration process of the countries in the region with focus on the Western Balkans.

On her side, Mariya Gabriel presented the main views of the European Commission regarding the Balkans, and above all in the field of digital economy and society. There were discussed the opportunities for participation of the Institute in the European research projects related to communications and other issues.

Professor Alexandre Kostov, Dr. habil. gave Mrs. Gabriel publications of the IBSCT as well as his newly published book 'Transport and Communications in the Balkans (1800-1914)'.

On January 16, 2018 (Tuesday) at 16h00 at the Institute of Balkan Studies, located on Moskovska Street No. 45 Prof. Orlin Sabev, Dr. habil. will deliver a public lecture on 'People, buildings and books: readers and libraries in the Ottoman Society" (17-19 c. )'. The lecture represents the final stage of the procedure for acquiring the academic position "Professor" according to the Law on the Development of the Academic Staff in the Republic of Bulgaria, and in compliance with Art. 12, para. 15 of the Regulations for the Conditions and Order for Acquisition of Academic Degrees and for Occupation of Academic Positions at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and Art. 33, para 22 of the Annex to the Rules of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Balkan Studies & Centre of Thracology on the terms and conditions for acquiring academic degrees and for taking up academic positions.
